'Black History Month: A cause for celebration !'
Two Spoken word pieces

'Legacy'
The theme for this year’s Black History Month is Legacy
and you asked me how would I like for you to remember me.
Well I say...
I want to be remembered for good,
I want to be remembered for getting people out of the hood.
I want to be remembered for spreading peace and harmony,
amongst the youths and the misunderstood.
I want to be remembered for fighting for Equality and Human Rights,
helping the homeless to find a place to stay for more than just a night.
I want to be remembered for sharing love from the holy one above.
I want to be remembered for being Black and Proud like James Brown,
instead of being labelled aggressive when fighting back from ancestral years of oppression.
Most importantly …
I want to be remembered as ME!

'My Black is Beautiful'
My Black is Beautiful
It’s not an unusual thing to say
but this society got you thinking otherwise and that’s not ok .
I see between your disguise,
lying between your teeth
telling me ‘don’t worry I’m on your side’
whilst concealing your despise and insolence towards me.
I know the truth though,
I know the root cause for all this animosity and pain…
your ignorance of which led to the oppression many people still experience till date.
If you feel threatened by me that’s a problem of your own ...though.
For I will not apologise for my soft brown eyes,
I won’t apologise for the colour of my skin, the plumpness of my lips,
neither will I apologise for the kinkiness of my type 4 hair.
See, I’m a 'Black Young Woman'
standing tall with pride
knowledge of my birth right and an acceptance of who I am…
and it's clear to see - I’ve got a bright future in plain sight
for me to reach.
So, if you like
'you' can stare
if you dare ... ask me ‘ermmm, can I touch your hair’ and face the consequence or accept the rejection that I will give you.
For I do not give a care,
if this response hurts you
because there are much bigger things that are filling my consciousness right now ….
like the pain, hurt and trauma my people face
especially from those of you who act like they care but are really acting FAKE.
A reminder that 'Pro-black is not Anti-white' …
the narrative is getting exhausting
so many innocent lives taken away from us
in the night.. in the day… in the park… around the bend…in our safe spaces….
WHEN WILL THIS ALL END.
BUT my 'Black is Beautiful',
my melanin is popping,
my culture is where it’s happening’
and I wouldn’t want to look any other way…
I say with a big grin on my face.
For I am …
PROUD
I am young,
gifted and black
and I’ve got my soul intact
for sure that’s a fact .
So before I go,
I hope my magic shows
or even glows to you through the words I spoke.
For I hope and pray that the societal burdens we experience no longer stay .
No, I am not naive in saying this
but I guess one can only dream.
